Sports4 is proud to be the title sponsor for Emilie’s Run in Ottawa. The women-only race takes place on June 23, 2012 at 9am.

The race is named after Emilie Mondor, the first Canadian women to run sub 15:00 for 5K and an Athens Olympian. She had moved to Ottawa to train for the marathon and was killed in a car accident in the fall of 2006 on her way home to Mascouche, Que., for a high school reunion.

With the support of Sports 4, the reinstatement of prizes will most certainly attract some of Canada’s top female runners and bring attention to women’s running in general.

The overall winner will receive $1,000 and, if she breaks the race record, will earn another $1,000.

The runner-up will pick up $750, while the next three runners will take home $550, $400 and $300, respectively.

The top masters (40 and older) runner will receive $750 and an additional $500 for a record time. The winning five-member team will earn $1,000.

Emilie’s Run is the fastest five-kilometre women’s road race in Canada

If you are breathing too hard slow down or walk a bit until you feel comfortable again.

Pick your route close to home (out your front door)—the more convenient it is the better chance you will have sticking with it.

Find a beginner training plan for your first race.

Wear spandex shorts under your regular running shorts so you don’t chafe “down there.”

Cotton socks will only lead to blisters; invest in socks designed for running.

Mix-up your training plan. Make sure your training plan is not too heavily focused on one thing. No matter what level of runner you are your training plan should include four essential elements: endurance speed rest cross-training.

During longer runs if you don’t like to carry water take some cash in your pocket pouch or a shoe wallet.

Run a route where there’s a corner store that you can use as a pit stop to pick up your water and maybe use the bathroom.

In the immortal words of Walt Stack famed senior-citizen distance runner “Start slow … and taper.”

At first keep your runs short and slow to avoid injury and soreness so you do not quit.
